How do you Espresso?

How do you Espresso?

By Cindy Reinhard

The foundation of everything you love about Daily Rise Coffee lies in our signature espresso coffee bean blend - that balanced, silky-smooth taste you know and love. While the specifics of this four-bean blend remain a family secret, we’d like to share a few insights into how we craft the perfect cup of coffee. Which, by the way, pairs deliciously with one of our amazing (limited) peach crepes at our Downtown location. Just saying.

We love this coffee bean. In fact, in tribute to all our Espresso Roast has done for Daily Rise Coffee, we're featuring it as our September Bean of the Month. This month only, we have also reduced the cost of our Daily Rise espresso shot glasses to only $5, making it easy to pick one up along with your BOM!

Pulling An Espresso Shot

We believe pulling an espresso shot is both an art and a science, but it IS a skill that can be learned. Here’s a look at our process, along with some tips and tricks for those who want to try it at home.

In our shops, we use 18 grams of coffee to pull a double shot. Measuring matters!

  • Shots take between 20-24 seconds to finish and weigh 55 grams each.
  • The golden crema (a.k.a. the golden-brown foam at the top of each shot) comes up to the 3oz line on a shot cup and settles into a 2oz liquid shot.

Two pro-tips from our DRC Baristas:

Pro Tip One
The time it takes to pull a shot is based on the grind, not the espresso machine.

  • The finer the grind the longer it takes for water to pass through.
  • The coarser the grind, the faster your water will pass through.

So basically - if your shots are taking too long, make your grounds a little coarser. If the shots are too quick, grind your coffee beans a bit finer.

Pro Tip Two
The trick for a great latte? Get that shot into milk within FIVE seconds.

Things to Remember

Here’s a few items to remember for you as we charge into September:

  • Our Maple and Pumpkin cold foam is available! You guys. It’s like a hug in a cup. YUM.
  • The Farmers Market Ogden is set to wrap up on Saturday, September 14th. Stop by one last time this season for a high five and a delicious cup of coffee.

Until next time, stay caffeinated!
