Espresso Tips for Home Brewing
Here are some basics to help you master your espresso machine:
- Steam First, Brew Second: Most home machines can’t steam milk and pull a shot at the same time. Start by steaming your milk, allowing the boiler time to recharge while you grind and tamp.
- Portafilter Tips: Fill your portafilter, level the grounds, and tamp firmly and evenly. Wipe off any excess grounds before locking it in.
- Dialing in Your Shot: Aim for a 20-second shot. Adjust shot time by tweaking the grind size—not the machine settings. Start with your grinder’s finest setting if needed.
- Grind Size Matters: Finer grounds mean slower extraction, while coarser grounds lead to faster extraction.
